Beijing time on April 1st news, just as Facebook parent company Meta continues to transform into the metaverse,The company lost some of its top artificial intelligence (AI) scientists this year.
Based on information provided by people familiar with the matter and analysis of profiles on LinkedIn,At least four prominent members of the Meta AI lab have left in recent months. They have published dozens of academic papers in world-renowned journals and achieved many breakthroughs.Meta uses these results to improve Facebook and Instagram functionality.

AI entrepreneur Karl Hermann worked at the labs of Meta AI rival DeepMind. He said on Monday that Meta AI’s true number of departures may be closer to six, and that there has been a worrying number of departures at the London AI Lab. “Meta’s London office just fell apart and they lost most of their (top) researchers in a six-week period,” Herman said.
Neil Lawrence, a professor of machine learning at the University of Cambridge, said in an interview that he was not surprised. “Zuckerberg’s eyes are all about the metaverse now…they haven’t been properly invested in London from the start,” he said.
Four “AI big cows” leave
Edward Grefenstette was part of the departure team. He is a research scientist who led Meta’s efforts in reinforcement learning, a branch of AI, and left in February this year. He declined to comment.
Meta AI research engineering manager Heinrich Kuttler has also left in recent weeks to join Inflection AI, a company led by DeepMind co-founders Mustafa Suleyman and The startup of LinkedIn billionaire founder Reid Hoffman. Before joining Meta in January 2019, Cutler worked at DeepMind for over two years.
Another recent departure is Ahmad Beirami. He resigned as a research scientist at Meta in January to join Google for the same position.
In December, Douwe Kiela resigned as a research scientist at Meta. He has been with Meta for five years and is now the head of research at Hugging Face, an AI startup. Cutler, Bellamy and Kira were yet to comment.
More AI employees resign
People familiar with the matter said,Many other Meta AI employees have either left or are expected to leave in the coming weeks, for no single reason.
“Some people moved to another big lab because they felt it would better advance their career or research agenda,” the person said. “Others chose to leave because the pay or employment potential was better elsewhere. Others just want to start a startup, or join a smaller company. For some, it might have something to do with Meta’s stock slump, but I don’t think that’s the main reason.”

In 2013, Yann LeCun, Meta’s chief AI scientist, spearheaded the creation of the company’s AI lab after a dinner with Zuckerberg at his home. He said in an email that “people’s interests are constantly changing and moving forward”.
It should be noted that multiple employees of DeepMind and other AI labs have also joined Meta over the past few years.
