The winners of the German Computer Game Award 2022 have been announced; Winners are happy all over the country – an overview of the reactions.

It is part of the rituals of award ceremonies that winners, organizers and sponsors express themselves in the hours and days afterwards – the German Computer Game Prize awarded yesterday evening in Munich is no exception. The federal government is providing €800,000 in prize money – a new record.

We documented the course of the evening in the DCP ticker; the list of winners can be found here, the nominees can be found here. In this article you can find out who was involved in the decision-making process on the jury. And the freshly roasted Friday column also deals with the DCP 2022.

Deep Silver Fishlabs / Koch Media

The space shooter developed in Hamburg and Munich chorus is game of the year – prize money: €100,000.

Paul Nicholls, Deep Silver Global Brand and Marketing Director: “The international team had as much freedom as possible in the conception and development of Chorus. We see the award we have now received as ‘Best German Game’ as confirmation that we can absolutely rely on the creative potential, skills and expertise of our studios.”

FilmFernsehFonds Bayern

The FFF Bayern, which is based at the Digital Ministry, subsidizes the production of films, series and games in Bavaria. Two FFF-funded games received awards at the DCP 2022: Bavaria invested €400,000 in chorus (Deep Silver Fishlabs / Koch Media) – for the winner of the Young Talent Award Wiblu (Donausaurus) there was a total of €37,000 in funding.

With CipSoft, a Bavarian company based in Regensburg also won the title of “Studio of the Year”.

FFF Managing Director Dorothee Erpenstein: “Chorus is among the first projects to benefit from increased production support following the EU notification. The enthusiastic fans and the decision of the DCP jury prove that this was a good investment. As the award for Wiblu shows, the young talents in Bavaria are also on a promising path and move with outstanding companies such as Koch Media and CipSoft in an inspiring environment, to which the creative and technological know-how in the Upper Palatinate makes a significant contribution. I congratulate all teams honored today.”

Bavarian Digital Ministry

Digital Minister Judith Gerlach (CSU), who is responsible for Bavaria’s games industry, represented the defaulting Prime Minister: Contrary to what had been announced, Markus Söder (CSU) did not attend the award ceremony.

Judith Gerlach: “The award ceremony in Munich confirms once again that Bavaria is a top location for the games industry. With the awards to CipSoft GmbH from Regensburg for the best German studio as well as the games Chorus by Deep Silver Fishlabs / Koch Media as the best German game and Wiblu by Peter Bartonik, Christian Walter and Ramona Raabe in the category Young Talent Award / Best Prototype, central again Prices to Bavaria. This is of course primarily the success of highly vital companies and creative developers.”

Gerlach also sees one in the awards Evidence of the effect of Bavarian games funding: “The Free State recognized the potential of the games industry early on and has been supporting it for over ten years. The current winners of the computer game prize were also supported with funds from the FilmFernsehFonds Bayern. A very lively games industry has developed in Bavaria. And that’s good. Because the games industry is not only very successful in economic terms itself. It is also a technological driver for other areas such as business, health and education. Congratulations to all award winners!”

Film and Media Foundation NRW

The joy is particularly great in Düsseldorf: Five awards go to prizewinners from North Rhine-Westphalia, two of which were created with funding from the Film and Media Foundation (Omno and White Shadows). In total, NRW has 15 nominations.

  • Best Family Game: Omno by Studio Inkyfox, Werther
  • Best Debut: White Shadows by Monokel, Cologne
  • Best Innovation and Technology: warp dive by Holocafé, Dusseldorf
  • Best Multiplayer Game: It Takes Two by Electronic Arts, Cologne
  • Special Price for Tim Plöger for the job exchange Games Jobs Germany

Film and Media Foundation NRW Managing Director Petra Müller: “We congratulate all award winners. And of course we are particularly pleased that two productions funded by the Filmstiftung received awards. Congratulations to Omno and the White Shadows team. The fact that almost a third of the awards go to NRW this year shows the efficiency and diversity of the regional industry.”

MFG Baden-Württemberg

A Juggler’s Tale from the Stuttgart studio Kaleidoscube wins the DCP 2022 and €40,000 for the “best game world and aesthetics”. In 2018, the team received funding from the state-run MFG media and film company.

Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection (BMWK)

Michael Kellner (Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen) is Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection (BMWK) – and thus for the first time a DCP organizer on the political side. At the same time, Kellner acted as laudator at the “Best German Game”.

“I congratulate all winners of this year’s German Computer Game Award. With its games, the German games industry impressively underlines the enormous potential it has. Games entertain us even in difficult times and, as innovation drivers, provide important impetus for digitization. And computer games are played online across all borders and thus build bridges between players worldwide – this is more important than ever, especially in these times. That’s why we want to further strengthen Germany as a games location and make it even more competitive internationally.”

game association

Alongside the Federal Republic of Germany, the Game industry association is one of the two sponsors of the German Computer Game Prize.

Managing Director Felix Falk: “Congratulations to all winners of the German Computer Game Award 2022! The past two years have been particularly challenging for everyone. Game development from the home office also presented major hurdles. The impressive winning titles of this year show that quality does not have to suffer under these difficult conditions, but that excellent games can be created. The young talent prizes are particularly exciting: This shows once again the enormous potential we can leverage in the coming years if we develop Germany into one of the leading games locations worldwide. As an industry, we want to achieve this together with politicians.”
