Simple looking but addictive Vampire Survivors has become a minor Steam hit. But the individual developer of the project did not actually have a great vision for the game. He put it together piece by piece.
The indie game Vampire Survivors was released in Early Access last December and quickly became a minor Steam hit. The 2D graphics are simple and pixelated, but after only a short playing time, this rogue-lite is teeming with hordes of enemies and masses of projectiles are buzzing across the screen. Luca Galante, the single developer of the secret tip, didn’t have a big vision for the game when he started development.
Single developer talks about the making of Vampire Survivors
However, the development of Vampire Survivors was overtaken by the Android game Magic Survival inspired. Galante explains to PCGamer that at the time he was only doing game development in his spare time while he was looking for a job. Since he played Magic Survival, he wanted to create his own version. After the working prototype, the chapter was over for him. But when he rediscovered an old asset pack with Castlevania-inspired graphics, he built the sprites with these vampires and ghouls. And what he saw pleased him. From there, he built the game piece by piece. “I had no vision,” Galante explains. “I just put in elements that were supposed to be fun.”
Steam hit Vampire Survivors: What’s next for the 98 percent game?
Compared to other games, Vampire Survivors offers something special: it doesn’t shy away from equipping the player with overpowered abilities or combinations. While other titles may be stingy, Vampire Survivors showers the player with godlike powers that can completely transform gameplay. Galante doesn’t care if a weapon or a combo is too powerful. “It’s a single player game, I’m more than happy when people just do what they enjoy,” said Galante.
