The Apple Health app contains a lot of information and can be overwhelming for the average user. It integrates with other apps to give you an overall summary of your health in one place. When used between iPhone and Apple Watch, it can be a useful tool for maintaining optimal wellness.
Here’s how you can navigate Apple Health a little better.
Beginning
When you start using the Health app, you need to set up a profile. The app will need basic information such as your name, date of birth, and gender. You can change these settings at any time in Health Information by tapping your Apple ID photo in the top right corner.
Health information includes blood type, skin type, and medications that affect heart rate. Here you can also indicate whether you use a wheelchair or not. If you choose yes, your iPhone and Apple Watch won’t count steps, they will count taps.
Your profile includes not only health data, but also your medical ID. Your medical ID lists your name, age, allergies, medications, weight, height, and emergency contact information so healthcare providers can review it in case of a medical emergency. It can be shared during emergency calls and on the lock screen of your iPhone. The Health app even lets you sign up to become an organ donor right from your profile.
Pro Tip: You can also export your health data from your profile if needed. This data can be backed up and stored in iCloud.
Integrate Apple Health with other apps.
You can add other apps to the Health app, such as Clock, Cycle Tracker, Fitness, Siri, Sleep, and more. There are also third party apps that you can integrate into your Health app. Ten Percent Happier and WaterMinder are a couple of great apps that I recommend checking out. They sync perfectly on both iPhone and Apple Watch.
View your health data.
The main screen of the app displays a summary of your health information. You can add certain themes to your favorites so that they appear right at the top. In the Summary section, you can view your activity, trends in your health, environmental noise levels, and more. While I won’t go into the details of everything, it’s important to have an idea of what’s out there.
Activity is a popular feature in the Health app. Here you can check your activity rings which show you how many calories you have burned, how many minutes you have been exercising and how many minutes per day you have been standing. Pairing Activity Rings with Apple Fitness+¹ maximizes this attribute.
Health trends notify you of changes in certain health topics, such as heart rate or exercise minutes. We’ve heard stories in the past about how this feature helped alert people to sudden health changes that forced them to seek life-saving medical care.
There is also an opportunity to participate in scientific research. For example, Apple recently conducted a women’s health study using the Cycle Tracking app.
The browsing tab allows you to take a deeper dive into specific health categories. Here you can search by nutrition, mindfulness, breathing, vital organs, and more. Each category allows you to enter specific details to provide additional information about your health. You can view trends over time as well as learn about a subject. The app offers articles tailored to each topic, as well as recommended third-party apps to track related data.

Share your data securely with others.
You can share your data with anyone in the Sharing tab. This is a secure and private way to provide a summary of each topic you share, rather than specific details. The information is encrypted and you can stop sending it at any time.
The app allows you to share this information with your doctor. It also allows you to connect to your healthcare system’s online portal. Just sign in with your healthcare system details. It’s private not only on your device, but also on your doctor’s device. When connected, your records will be downloaded so you can see the information your doctor is working on.
Do you use the Health app?
Although the app has many features, some parts are not for everyone. I recommend digging around the app a bit to see what specifically works for you.
Do you have any tips and tricks to share? What would you like to see on the platform in the future?
