Do fish count? ? ?
You heard that right. A recent study from the University of Bonn in Germany confirmed this:
The zebrafish and stingrays can add or subtract 1 digit from 1 to 5.
And the accuracy is as high as 94%.
The research has been published in Nature’s Scientific Reports:
How do fish count?
The objects of the researchers’ experiment were 8 zebra-like cichlids and 8 stingrays, which were obtained from the Frankfurt Zoo in Germany. Among them, 6 zebra-like cichlids participated in the previous “Cognitive experiment“.
The experimental environment is as follows:
They were placed in an experimental container of 61cm × 31cm × 31cm.
The researchers first showed the fish cards marked with blue or yellow icons (blue for “+1” and yellow for “-1”). Then in this container there are 2 doors with different numbers of icons on them, but only 1 door is the “positive solution”.
For example, if a fish is shown a card with 3 blue icons, the task now is to count “3+1”.then the fish needs to go throughThe door with only 1 blue iconif it swims correctly, it will be rewarded.
The principle of subtraction can also be deduced in the same way.
The results of the experiment found that 6 zebra cichlid and 3 stingrays were able to rememberThe relationship between blue, yellow and addition and subtraction.
So how long did it take them to learn the math?
The zebra-like cichlid learned after an average of 28 rounds, the researchers said; the stingray averaged 68 rounds. And they learn addition faster than subtraction:
-
Zebra-like cichlid: 381 additions got 296 (78%) correct; 381 subtractions got 264 (69%) correct.
-
Stingray: 169 out of 180 additions (94%); 161 out of 180 subtractions (89%).
In this regard, the researchers stated:
It is necessary for humans to re-study the cognitive and perceptual abilities of fish.
Netizens exclaimed
Fish knows mathematics, and in the face of such experimental results, netizens have expressed “magic”:
There are also netizens who have opened their minds and remembered the old saying:
Eating fish makes you smarter…
