There are many of you who like to work with portable programs. Be it a browser, such as Ben’s (Firefox, Chrome, or Edge. Or Thunderbird as a mail program. These are difficult to set as the default program.
Even though Microsoft has just added the option to set a browser directly as the default browser under Windows 11, the portable programs do not appear in Settings -> Apps -> Default apps. Then the Portable Registrator can help.
In the normal version, the Portable Registrator is delivered with a preconfigured “PortableRegistrator.conf” for browser and mail programs. But you can expand it. More on that later. If you start PortableRegistrator.exe (as an administrator), you can enter the path, as in the example of the Chrome Updater. Set the program type and the program name will then be entered automatically. Now click on “Register” and that’s it.
If you now start Settings -> Apps -> Default apps, the Chrome Launcher Portable appears in the list of apps. Here you can now set the portable browser as the default.
If you want to undo it again, the registered application appears at the bottom of the list. You just click Unregister and that’s it. The portable program is out of the list in the settings.
On the GitHub page, SiL3NC3 also gives instructions on how to edit the PortableRegistrator.conf, for example to be able to set a portable image viewer. To do this, the config must be expanded, name (in this case “Image Viewer”), and file assignments (here .jpg, .gif…) each in one line.
If you start the Portable Registrator again, the “Image Viewer” also appears as a selection. As a note: Not every program responds to the “%1” parameter. You have to find out and try it. But let’s see, maybe the little tool will be expanded. If you’re interested, just keep an eye on it.
