Code found in the latest version of the TweetDeck app suggests that a Twitter Blue subscription, which currently costs $2.99 a month, may be required soon.

Tweetdeck is a popular way for social media professionals and power users to manage multiple accounts. It also provides the ability to create separate feeds for users whose tweets you don’t want to miss, as well as tweets with specific keywords…

Maestro of Reverse Engineering Jane Manchun Wong found the corresponding code in the latest version of the application.

The new @TweetDeck could be a paid feature exclusive to @TwitterBlue subscribers, according to the code I found in the app.

The code blocks access to TweetDeck depending on whether the user has a Twitter Blue subscription and redirects them to the registration page if not.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen TweetDeck require a paid subscription. Back in early 2021, when the Twitter Blue subscription was under development, it was speculated that TweetDeck could be part of the package. This did not happen when the subscription service started, but it was considered as a possible later step.

It’s likely that professional Twitter users won’t even blink an eye paying a relatively small monthly fee to access TweetDeck, but individual power users are another matter. Subscription fatigue—when a bunch of individually low monthly payments start to add up to significant amounts and people start questioning the value—is likely to be a factor here.

However, there may be good news. For starters, TweetDeck is currently only available in a few countries, so monetizing Twitter could at the very least incentivize the company to expand more widely.

Secondly, it looks like there might be a way to avoid the fee. While Twitter is currently testing a significantly more powerful version of the app, and that version is likely to require a paid subscription, Manchun notes that she also found a link to an “outdated version” of the app. Twitter supporting two versions would mean that the less powerful version (i.e. the current app) could be free.
