In a video published a few days ago, Samsung presented its solution for the next generation of memory in the form of DDR5 RAM. This should have a capacity of 512 GiB on a single module and be able to reach speeds of over 6,400 Mbit/s.
Samsung has big plans for the next generation of memory. in one Youtube video from April 6th, the global electronics company shows what its latest solution for DDR5 memory looks like, accompanied by the motto “Unlimit the Limit”. Samsung’s technology is said to be able to pack 512 GiB of storage onto just one RAM module, which it says is four times the capacity of what the previous generation of RAM had to offer.
These technologies make it possible
Samsung was already one of the industry leaders in DDR4 memory and of course wants to maintain this status with DDR5. The current DDR4 modules already use the company’s “Layer Stacking Memory Packing” technology, which is to be further refined in the DDR5 RAM. An illustration shows the differences between four-layer DDR4 memory chips and eight-layer DDR5 chips, both of which are assembled using Samsung’s Through-Silicon-Via (TSV) technology.
The distances between the dies should be 40 percent smaller with DDR5. Accordingly, according to Samsung, the denser DDR5 chipsets have a thickness of 1 mm and are therefore thinner than DDR4 with 1.2 mm. A single 512 GiB RAM module will also be manufactured with eight stacked DRAMs connected together.

In the promotional video, the manufacturer also states that its new DDR5 memory will be twice as fast as the previous generation, with a transfer rate of over 6,400 Mbit/s. According to Samsung, since DDR5 memory also integrates a PMIC (Power Management Integrated Circuit) directly into a DIMM (Dual-Inline Memory Module) compared to DDR4, it is 30 percent more energy-efficient and ensures a more stable power supply. Samsung is said to want to deliver DDR5 memory to data centers and manufacturers of smartphones and laptops. Time will tell whether RAM modules with a capacity of 512 GiByte will actually end up in the hands of consumers.
