April 7th is World Health Day. This year, experts call for special attention to the health of those over fifty, tell how to help them improve and maintain their health, and share expert research on BMI (body mass index), which increases with age.
At the beginning of 2022, platform specialists Zepp Health published the results of a study of anonymized data from adult respondents on the number of steps, stress level, sleep duration, body mass index, blood oxygen saturation (SpO2), training time and intensity, and other information. The data was collected from 6 million users of Zepp and Amazfit wearable devices, and based on them, it was found out that the population of Russia has a tendency to increase BMI with age.
BMI measures the ratio of a person’s weight to height. The value indicates whether the weight is normal, underweight or overweight. So, only 25% of participants aged 50 years and older had a normal indicator (for comparison: in 30-year-olds this value is 52%). This is because with age, long-term activity decreases and metabolic processes slow down, but eating habits remain the same.
The researchers recalled that being overweight leads to a range of health problems, and they are more pronounced in older people than in younger people. Diseases of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems, the development of diabetes mellitus are only some of these common risks.
Evidence-based cardiologist Arina Zhegalina gave simple recommendations on how to maintain a healthy BMI at age 50 and older.
- Physical activity. At least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity physical activity (yoga, walking, housework) or at least 70 minutes per week of vigorous-intensity activities (running, cycling).
- Healthy food. The Harvard approach to nutrition will help here, which involves mentally dividing the plate into 4 parts. Two-thirds should be filled with vegetables and fruits, one with protein foods, and the rest with carbohydrates.
- Dream. The golden rule is to go to bed and wake up at the same hours. And the main thing is that you feel comfortable and you feel rested in the morning, and there is no desire to sleep during the day.
- mental health. Strive to relax and do more of your hobbies.
It is important to monitor the condition of the body during exercise. You can rely on your own feelings, but it is better to leave this work to wearable devices such as Amazfit smartwatches. They are more reliable, accurately register the most important health indicators (quality of sleep, heart rate, blood oxygen levels) and allow you to make prompt decisions if something goes wrong. Smartwatches also help you track your progress and keep track of positive changes, which is very motivating to keep exercising.
