IT House reported on April 7 that according to 36 Krypton reports, it was learned from a number of people familiar with the matter that Zhang Jianyong, an autonomous driving veteran who has worked in Weilai for 7 years, will resign in the near future.

It is reported that,Zhang Jianyong is NIO’s Assistant Vice President of Autonomous Driving, responsible for autonomous driving systems and integration, reporting directly to Li Bin, chairman and CEO of NIO. Since joining NIO in 2015, he has experienced the construction of NIO’s autonomous driving R&D system from 0 to 1, as well as the delivery of first- and second-generation autonomous driving platforms. Before that, Zhang Jianyong worked at SAIC and participated in the development of SAIC’s autonomous driving.

The report also stated that the autopilot system team under Zhang Jianyong’s leadership has a scale of nearly 400 people. After his departure, it will also trigger the reintegration of the entire autopilot team of Weilai.

NIO’s self-driving business has four teams, respectively, the hardware team, led by Vice President Bai Jian, the operating system and data security team, led by Vice President Wang Qiyan, the Algorithm Team (AA) led by Ren Shaoqing, and the Systems Engineering Team (AS) led by Zhang Jianyong. The heads of these four teams all report directly to CEO Li Bin. After Zhang Jianyong left, Weilai does not seem to intend to continue to retain the position of the person in charge of the autonomous driving system, but to break up the business he is responsible for and integrate it into other autonomous driving business lines.

IT House understands that as of press time, Weilai has not responded to this.
