Instagram’s misogynistic slurs are rampant in private messages sent on the photo and video sharing app, a new report says.
The report claims that Instagram doesn’t respond to 90% of abusive private messages reported to moderators, a claim the company denies…
It is reported by the Washington Post.
The Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH), a nonprofit dedicated to online hate and disinformation, worked with five high-profile women, including actress Amber Heard, to analyze over 8,717 direct messages received by women.
The report blames Instagram for not responding to reports of abuse and major issues famous women on the platform face when it comes to using Instagram’s security tools.
According to one shocking statistic, CCDH found that Instagram did not respond to 90 percent of insults sent via direct messages to women in this study, despite the messages being handed over to moderators.
Instagram has stated that it is acting, although its responses are not always visible to anyone other than the offender.
Instagram says it penalizes users in stages, with one violation resulting in a strike, a warning, and a blocking of a person’s ability to send direct messages for a set period of time.
The problem is, of course, wider than Instagram. Women receive harassing and threatening messages on Facebook, Twitter and other social networks with a disturbing frequency, with minorities being particularly targeted.
Women of color, women of color, LGBTQ people, and other systematically marginalized groups are particularly vulnerable to online attacks. According to a 2017 Pew Research Center study, one in four black Americans have experienced online harassment because of their race or ethnicity. The messages that women of color receive often mix racism with misogyny. [known as misogynoir].
