the Borderlands DLC “Tiny Tina’s Attack on the Dragon Fortress” was so well received by fans that the developers decided after just under half a year to launch the offshoot with the crazy Tina instead of another Borderlands title.

The adventure of the most dangerous 13-year-old in the Borderlands universe is brought up as a game of Dungeons and Dragons…err, sorry, “Bunkers and Badasses”. So just like a DnD roleplay night, you create a character with specific stats and an appropriate role. The game director Tina decides on the course of the story and thus often also on the fate of your hero. Those of you who know the wacky, explosives-loving, bunny-loving Tina from other Borderlands installments won’t be surprised that adventures can be twisted and the rules can change all the time.

In the test of PC Games Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands received a 9/10. We’ve been shooting our way through the Borderlands spinoff for a good week and we’ll tell you whether the DnD adventure in the Borderlands universe keeps what it promises.

Karsten thinks…

Do you know which Borderlands game I’ve had the most fun with so far? Ok, I’ll tell you. Featuring Tales from the Borderlands by Telltale Games. I just love the humor and the wacky characters and stories. What I find stupid, on the other hand, are shooter opponents with life bars that you have to shoot several magazines into (which is why I never played the games in the Destiny and The Division series for long).

The upper world is like the tabletop board on which we move, accept side quests and enter new dungeons. However, the fast travel system from Borderlands was retained.

It’s also a turn off when, after a fight, there are 32,321,313 pieces of loot lying on the ground, but 99 percent of them can be thrown away. Or when half a dozen chests, cassettes, boxes or safes need to be opened at every corner. What Gearbox has never understood in either case: Less is often more. That way you devalue the fun of looting. And it’s precisely because of these three points that I’ve never played through a Borderlands shooter before.

Appearance: Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands

Despite my previous experience with Borderlands shooters, I was looking forward to Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands. The trailers promised even more wacky humor and lots of whimsical references to the fantasy genre and tabletop hobby. And although the three criticisms I just mentioned also apply to the new Gearbox game, I really enjoy the game “Bunkers and Badasses” with Tiny Tina so far.

Sure, jokes like “ass horse” could also come from my six-year-old son. But I often sat in front of the PC smiling or even laughing because a saying or an allusion caught my humor center exactly. Most notably, I had the most fun with many of the side quests. While other games often serve you generic run-of-the-mill stuff as optional activities, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands awaits you with some of the most entertaining missions I’ve experienced in shooters, but also in role-playing games.

Our bard (Yes, pictured here) cannot bless our boat to go on the water. But he can nuke the whole goddamn ocean... another possibility.

Shooting also makes me a little more in a good mood than in the predecessors, because I’m not only allowed to use weapons and special abilities, but also magic like deadly meteors. Meanwhile, my Sporekeeper’s mushroom companion envelops enemies in a cloud of poison. And soon I might finally unlock the second talent tree. Then there are even more possibilities!

The but in the soup … or something

In theory, even the melee is important this time. We are allowed to equip fat peacemakers and use them to carve our arguments onto an enemy’s food board. There’s even a class that screams front-line action, the Brr-Serker.

Unfortunately, there is no fun close combat system. When we want to hit, we press V. Over and over again. That’s it. Like briefly shattering a frozen enemy? Optimal! Smash your way through nearby monsters like a berserker for minutes? Boring and tiring. So my wishes for the next Borderlands game are: Increase the melee combat and eliminate 75 percent of the loot and containers from the game. If you then present us with hand-designed loot instead of random stuff, in the end I’ll still be a fan without ifs and buts.
